ELIGIBILITY
.
Open to all Bicolano writers, at least 16 years old, physically fit and able to participate in the pili tree-planting and other workshop activities in Pili, Camarines Sur.

REQUIREMENTS
.
Interested parties may submit either 3 poems, 1 short-story or a one-act play written in any of the Bikol languages. English or Filipino manuscripts will be accepted but pieces written in the Bikol language will be given preference.

Entries must be original, typewritten, double-spaced, on a short bond paper and submitted together with a bio-data containing the author’s brief literary background. It must come with a diskette containing soft copy of the manuscript.

BENEFITS
.
Successful applicants will be entitled to attend the workshop free of charge. They will also be provided free board and lodging and workshop materials.

DEADLINE OF SUBMISSIONS

Entries sent by mail or courier must be received on or before April 30, 2006 and must be addressed to the: 3rd Juliana Arejola-Fajardo Workshop sa Pagsurat Bikol c/o The Arejola Foundation for Social Responsibility, 2nd Floor Dabu Building, Elias Angeles St., Naga City.

Thoughts of death drives young writer to pen winning pieces

IRIGA CITY — This young Bicolano writer is preoccupied with death but he said that this unusual thought that lingers in his mind drives him to write literary pieces, which eventually earned awards and recognitions. Kristian Sendon Cordero , 23, poet and fictionist, confessed he feels he’ll die at the age of 40, and assuming he has some 17 years more to live, he wanted to be more productive by creating works that would contribute to Bicol literature. . Awards . Cordero’s short story entitled “Langaw” won second prize in the category of short fiction in Filipino in this year’s Palanca Award. It is a dark tale of a poor, abused girl whose sufferings ended tragically by the railroad where she died after being raped by several men. . He said he wanted to make a statement on violence against women to make people aware of the creeping problem that victimized many helpless girls and women. . “I cannot forget my aunt who died a violent death in the hands of her husband,”

Gusto mo bang mag-Med?

1. Pangarap ko talaga noon ang maging doktor. Sinabi ko noon sa nanay ko na balang araw ay mapapagawan ko siya ng bahay na kasing gara nung bahay ng doktor malapit sa'min. Kumuha ako ng B.S. Medical Technology dahil yun daw ang best pre-med course. Pero hindi lang med-realated courses ang puwedeng pang pre-med. Naalala ko yung clerk na kinukuhanan ng dugo yung pasiyente para sa Arterial Blood Gas. Naka-limang tusok na siya pero hindi pa rin niya na-hit yung ugat. Sabi niya, mas magaling daw yung mga kaklase niyang Med Tech. Pano ba naman, Food Tech yung pre-med niya. Pero okay lang yun. Dahil pwede ring maging doktor ang mga kumukuha ng: 1. B.S. General 2.
